Update from UN News Centre: Senior peacekeeping and political affairs officials explain how the UN maintains efforts against Lord’s Resistance Army
The Office of the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict answers questions about UN work to address LRA operations. We hope this conversation will encourage people to learn all of the facts about the hundreds of thousands of children affected by conflict around the world.

How does the LRA recruit children and what is their role?
Where is the LRA operating?
What are the aspirations of the LRA?
What are other violations are committed against children by the LRA?
What has the United Nations done to address the violations committed against children by the LRA?
Why is a military action against the LRA risky?
What can I do for the children affected by the LRA?

Report of the UN Secretary-General on the Lord’s Resistance Army-affected areas (November 2011, S/2011/693)
UNICEF has been working for decades to protect children from violence/abuse. But there’s still much to be done.

Find out if your country has signed the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the Involvement of Children in armed conflict.
Statement from Special Representative Ms. Radhika Coomaraswamy:

I am pleased to see such a lively discussion on an issue that is often under-reported. If people want to help, they can support programs for children—-who have escaped the LRA—-to rebuild their lives and their communities throughout Central Africa. Any military action against LRA should pay heed to the fact that Kony’s army is largely comprised of children.

A NEW PERSPECTIVE

Since Invisible Children’s newest and most important film “Kony 2012” released on Monday, March 5th for free on the Internet it has been viewed over 50 million times on Youtube and 14 million on Vimeo. And, to be expected, Invisible Children has received a lot of backlash…

Stop at nothing. KONY 2012. Make him famous.

// So here I am.//

Jenn aka my sista-friend+soulmate+pseudo-manager+everything encouraged me to keep up with my tumblr posts EVEN IF no one reads it…

————————————————————-

In this industry, it’s nerve-wracking meeting people especially when it gets to “so what do you do?”…

I have the hardest time picking out which “hat” I’m gonna wear that day, depending on who I’m talking to and/or networking with… and ALL my insecurities that go along with each title:

* Oh I’m a singer/musician (…but I can’t really play any instruments and am not the best at writing songs)

* I’m a hairstylist (…but it’s something to fall back on if my other passions fail - namely singing/dancing… but I do enjoy it. Especially color. )

* I’m a professional dancer/dance teacher/fitness instructor (…but… I don’t have the best body)

* I’m a _________. (insecurities, insecurities)

And whichever title I say, automatically I’m labeled as _________.

It frustrates me.

But now’s the time to choose. Finally. And be confident in that decision.

I am a musician.  A musician that can also dance, do hair, direct films/music videos, social marketing, non-profit activism, etc… and be flippin’ GREAT at it.

This is Wikipedia’s excerpt of what a musician is:

//

musician is an artist who plays a musical instrument. It may or may not be the person’s profession. Musicians can be classified by their roles in performing music and writing music.

Also….

  • A person who makes music a profession.
  • Anyone, professional or not, who is skilled in making music or performing music creatively.
  • One who composes, conducts, or performs music, especially instrumental music.

//

I always hesitated to say “musician” because people usually follow up w/ “oh what do you play?” to which my response is “my voice” or “I’m a singer…” to which their response is (with a lot less interest) “…Oh. …That’s great!”

It’s almost as if people automatically write you off as the gadillion people trying to make it in LA as singers, actors, dancers, entertainers, etc.

But you know what, NO MORE.

I have a damn good voice…

It’s not THE BEST but it’s LEGIT and a helluva LOT better than a LOT of voices out there…

I know it WILL be a hard route and life (J’duh. Already living it.)

SO with that I’m gonna pursue it 110% until I’ve TRULY given it MY ALL.

Because I’m not gonna live my life with any sort of regret wondering “what if?”.

Ok rant done.

Bye.
